2007 Solar Decathlon Project

Team Montreal has an ambitious project: to build an intelligent, self-sufficient, and ecological solar-powered house that meets typical North American comfort standards. Although the house is powered exclusively by the sun, the occupants will enjoy every convenience found in a normal dwelling, such as a cooking range, refrigerator, dishwasher, washer-dryer, television, computer, etc. The occupants will even be able to recharge an electric vehicle’s batteries with surplus energy!

More than a competition

The integrated multidisciplinary approach, with architects and engineers working together, provides the expertise required to build a solar house that surpasses the strictest industry standards. The innovations and systems used have been selected for their contribution to the development and promotion of good environmental practices in the construction industry.  Publicly presenting our project’s economic and energy performance can help raise awareness of the social and economic viability of an environmental approach.  Members of the public can thus draw inspiration from the applied concepts when renovating or building their own homes in order to minimize the environmental impact upon their living spaces.
